Learn why a Content Management System saves website owners time and money

CMS-based sites are ideal for busy website owners who require a hands-on approach to updating content.

I’m going to share a not-so-nice secret about some website developers: We’re creators, not maintainers. We look forward to maintaining websites about as much as we look forward to a tax audit.

So, what’s a client to do? Organizations change. Information changes. Which means that websites need to be updated. How’s it going to get done?

The answer is something called a Content Management System (CMS). It will allow your organization to maintain the website without the need to call in an outsider. You simply log into your CMS, which looks like a cross between a browser and a word processor, make the needed changes, and then you’re done.

That’s much faster than making a list of changes that need to be made, calling your Web designer, then checking to see if the designer made the changes correctly, or made them at all.

How can you determine if a CMS-based site is right for you? Generally, if your website’s content changes more than once a month, then you need a CMS.

Cost and Benefits

As compared to sites that are collections of pages that must be updated/maintained by someone who knows HTML, CMS-based sites have a higher upfront cost. This is because programming and training are also required.

But once you’re past the initial setup and training, you’ll save a lot of time in maintaining your site. And if you’ve ever tried to maintain a website consisting of HTML pages, you know just how time-consuming site maintenance can be.

You’ll also dispense with the need for in-house expertise in HTML, not to mention downloading Web pages from your site, making the changes, then uploading them again. Or, if you don’t have such a guru in your company, you won’t need to call your Web designer e-v-e-r-y time you need to make a change on your site.

Best of all, updating and maintaining a CMS-based site requires no special expertise. This means that these tasks could be performed by an in-house clerical person. Or you could hire a Virtual Assistant to maintain your site.

Is it time to speed up your site maintenance? Western Sky Communications can put your site on one of the following Content Management Systems:
