Construction Photography: More on Water Harvesting for Commercial Properties
January 29th, 2009This past November, I wrote a post on Tucson's new ordinance that requires water harvesting for commercial developments. To show how this can be done, the Ward 1 City Council Office is creating a public demonstration site.
Work on the Ward 1 site is now being completed. On Saturday, January 24, Watershed Management Group volunteers gathered to put the finishing touches on the landscaping and the cistern's plumbing...

Event Photography: 23rd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration
January 22nd, 2009On Monday, January 19, hundreds of Tucsonans commemorated the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a march and festival at Reid Park.
The festival featured music, mime, poetry, and dancing. Tariq Rasool and the Songhai Drummers got things going...

My neighbors, Chuck and Beatrice, enjoying the festivities...

Nature Photography: Extreme Weather
January 15th, 2009My recent trip to Pennsylvania featured just about every kind of weather imaginable. Most of my time there was snow-free. But not fog-free...

And certainly not wind-free. Gusts of 40 mph and higher were recorded on New Year's Eve. This had predictable effects on local trees and powerlines...

Website Design: University Online Course
January 13th, 2009Nutrigenomics draws on research in nutrition, genetics, and several other scientific fields. Although nutrigenomics is fairly new, there is a great demand for collaboration, training and education.
I just finished working with Randy Burd, Ph.D., who is on the faculties of the University of Arizona, University of Buffalo, and Thomas Jefferson University, on an online nutrigenomics course. This was a combination Web design and photography project. The fruits and vegetables were very cooperative -- and tasty -- photographic subjects.
The screenshot you see below is from the course's public website:
There also is another version that is part of the University of Arizona's online course system. Access is restricted to enrolled students.

Travel Photography: Take the Long Way Home
January 5th, 2009My holiday plans were simple: Go back to Pennsylvania to visit the family for Christmas and New Year. Since I live in Arizona, such a plan involves air travel. And, to put it mildly, the 2008-2009 holiday travel season has been hellacious.
My flight from Tucson to Chicago reached Chicago airspace as a major snowstorm was raging. We circled for so long that the plane ran low on fuel and had to be diverted to Omaha. And ours wasn't the only flight that was so affected...

Other than watching the ground crew refuel, there wasn't much to do...

So, I decided to get up and go for a walk. But, alas, I was barred from going outside for a stretch on the jet stairs. Safety reasons, said Gary the flight attendant...

Oh, well.
After the refueling was done, we headed up to Chicago. Where it was still snowing...

Which led to a mandatory de-icing session before my Philadelphia flight could take off...

My arrival in Philadelphia was five hours later than scheduled. But the family was waiting to greet me. Much fun and more photography followed.
