Bike-tography 111: Used Bicycle Parts Gate
May 29th, 2009In Tucson’s Armory Park neighborhood, I came upon this gate sculpture. Obviously done by a bicyclist wishing to find another use for all of those old bike parts…

Construction Photography: Replacing a Water Line
May 27th, 2009I live and run my studio in a house that’s 53 years old. Like most houses its age, it has issues. (Translation: It’s an emotionally needy house.)
Earlier this spring, I was repairing the plumbing in the shower. When I went outside to shut off the house water, I noticed that the water line was leaking.
Uh-oh. Time for a water line replacement.
After interviewing four companies, I chose Al Coronado Plumbing as the contractor for this job. Here’s one of the final stages of installing the new line…

Event Photography: They’re off and running!
May 20th, 2009Since mid-April, I’ve been participating in the weekly Meet Me at Maynards social run and walk through Downtown Tucson. A record number of 212 people participated this past Monday, bringing the total participation in the six events to 1,087. Not bad for almost summer in Tucson!
Here is a look at Monday’s action, starting with the runners leaving Maynards Market and Kitchen…

The pack crosses Congress Street and heads south into the Armory Park neighborhood…

Passing by the Fox Tucson Theatre…

Event Photography: Composting Workshop
May 8th, 2009In the interest of helping its members grow more of their own food, the Food Conspiracy Co-op just presented a composting workshop at Tanque Verde Gardens. Our Professor of Compost was none other than Leo Mercado, owner/operator of Tanque Verde Gardens…

Leo talked about his farm and his philosophy for creating great compost. He showed us his large scale composting operation and also provided tips for starting a residential compost heap.

Event Photography: Folkies and Rodders
May 8th, 2009This past weekend was a busy one in Tucson. The Downtown scene was enlivened by the 24th Annual Tucson Folk Festival, which featured two days of music, workshops, and food and craft vendors.
The Folk Festival attracts talent from near and far, and here’s the really cool part: There’s no charge to attend any of the performances. It’s a Folk Festival tradition.
My friend Diamond Jim Hewitt came down from Oracle, Arizona, with a couple of his musical neighbors, Scott McMullen and Scott’s wife, Cyn-d Turner. They performed at the Acoustic Showcase.

Cyn-d Turner on percussion…

The Folk Festival was a big hit with the avian set…

Tucson’s community radio station, KXCI-FM, broadcast the Folk Festival on 1.5-hour delay. The station’s engineering crew takes a break during a live performance at the Plaza Stage…

Between acts, KXCI deejays Amanda Shauger (left) and Carol Anderson (right) offer their commentary on the Folk Festival…

Enough music for you? Nearby 4th Avenue hosted a hot rod show…

Event Photography: Sidewalk Concert at the Co-op
May 6th, 2009Permit me to start this post with a disclaimer: I’m not an economist, and I don’t play one on TV.
But I have been noticing that, despite all the news of economic turmoil, locally-based, community-oriented businesses are doing just fine. Take Tucson’s Food Conspiracy Co-op, for example. Despite its location on parking-scarce 4th Avenue, sales are on the upswing. And that’s something worth celebrating.
So, what does the co-op decide to do? Throw an Earth Day party for the public. On the sidewalk. Outside the store. The festivities featured music by the Silver Thread Trio…

Okay, they brought a bass player and became a quartet. Here they are again…

Event Photography: Meet Me at Maynards is growing!
May 6th, 2009Last month, I blogged about the weekly Meet Me at Maynards (MMM) social walk and run around Downtown Tucson. MMM #4 happened this past Monday, and the crowd voted overwhelmingly to keep going throughout the summer. And now, here’s a MMM retrospective:
The crowd gathers before the start…

Gotta set that watch…

MMM co-founder Randy Accetta with Tucson City Council Member Nina Trasoff…

Nina goes into Politician Mode and makes a short speech…

And they’re off on a three-mile trek around Downtown Tucson!

Nature Photography: Desert Botanical Garden and Wildlife World
May 6th, 2009Late last month, I joined Judy Vorfeld and her brother, David Crook, for a couple of photographic days. Our first stop was the Desert Botanical Garden, which is located in the southeastern corner of Phoenix, Arizona. The cactus flowers were out in force…

The saguaro cactii will bloom in a few weeks…

Meanwhile, over at the Butterfly Magic exhibit, the butterflies were looking pretty ragged…

Oh, well, it’s been a long exhibit, and it’s about done for this year.
Our next photo op was Wildlife World, which is out in the West Valley near the White Tank Mountains. This is a zoo that strives to keep animals in as natural a setting as possible. However, it looks like these African Singing Dogs are singing the "We Wanna Get Outta Here" blues…

On to the Wildlife World aquarium, which was drawing quite the Sunday crowd…

Event Photography: Wheelchair Basketball Scrimmage
May 5th, 2009Ever been to a wheelchair basketball game? It looks like a cross between basketball and roller derby. Just look at the chairs. They’re built to withstand hard collisions, tip-overs, and other forms of mayhem. The players are pretty rugged too. I recently caught a Tucson Lobos practice. Thirty minutes into the scrimmage, the guys were still going flat-out…
