Website Redesign: Applied Biosciences PSM Degree Program
June 24th, 2009Earlier this year, I was asked to redesign the website of the University of Arizona Professional Science Master's Degree in Applied Biosciences. The site serves as a student recruiting tool, and it combines UA campus scenes with information on degree requirements, career opportunities, and application procedures.
Applied Biosciences PSM students can specialize in any area of the life sciences, drawing on the resources of over a dozen biological science departments in multiple colleges on the Tucson campus and Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Travel Photography: Tucson Train Station
June 22nd, 2009For a long time, the Amtrak station was a Downtown Tucson afterthought. There wasn't much reason for going there unless you had to catch a train or you were meeting someone arriving by rail. And did I mention that rail service to Tucson is not a daily thing?
The station was renovated not too long ago, and it's now home to a pretty good restaurant and convenience mart called Maynards Market and Kitchen. Restaurant patrons can enjoy patio dining while watching the trains go by. Or they can watch each other...

The people shown above are part of the crowd that turns out for the weekly Meet Me at Maynards Social Run/Walk through Downtown Tucson.

Travel Photography: Discovering Where You Live
June 19th, 2009My preferred mode of travel is the bicycle. As wonderful as it is, the bicycle isn't ideal. Especially for really, truly getting to know a place. For that, you need to get off your bike and walk around.
This Downtown Tucson photo is a classic example. Had I been bicycling along Cushing Street, I would have thought, "Nice sunset." But I would have kept on riding. On foot, I was forced to study the light and notice how unusual it was...

Website Redesign: Math and Science Education Consultant
June 15th, 2009Longtime client Sheila Tobias has made an art and a science of being an outsider to science and mathematics. Hers is a household name for books like Overcoming Math Anxiety, which is still in print more than 30 years after publication. She's also the author of They're not Dumb, They're Different, Breaking the Science Barrier, and Rethinking Science as a Career.
In conjunction with the release of her latest book, Science Teaching as a Profession, I redesigned her website. The new site provides information about her math and science education research and consulting, and lists her presentation topics. It also conforms to Web Standards.
Here is a before-and-after look at Sheila Tobias' site...

Event Photography: Burgers for a Buck
June 2nd, 2009In addition to being the coolest station in Tucson, KXCI-FM 91.3 has some marvelous community events. This past Saturday, KXCI deejay Cathy Rivers played the tunes while Sunflower Market served burgers for a buck...

Burgers for a Buck proceeds benefitted KXCI.
