Animal Photography: Keep Them Close
July 3rd, 2009This three-day weekend includes Independence Day. It's a day for picnics, parades, cookouts, concerts, and fireworks. The last item is what I'm going to elaborate on here.
While fireworks are fun to watch and listen to, your dog probably has a different opinion of them. Many dogs find the sound of fireworks terrifying. Some of them flee in terror and, if found, they end up in animal shelters. Others are never found.
Although Fourth of July will never be your dog's favorite holiday, you can make things better by keeping your dog close to you. Let your dog stay in the house for the day. It's better for your dog, and for your neighbors, who won't have to hear your dog barking and howling in anguish.

Event Photography: July 4th Parade
July 4th, 2008A few days after I moved to Tucson, I heard that my neighborhood was having a July 4th parade. Being the new kid in town, I was curious to see what a parade in 100-degree heat would be like. So, I ventured over to the corner of Camden Street and Palo Verde Boulevard to see what the neighbors had cooked up.
What I saw was an all-ages collection of marchers strutting their stuff, and they were led by an impromptu band. After the parade,we gathered at an old stone house for refreshments. There were plenty of warm welcomes for this newcomer, even though I didn't yet have a job or any idea where I'd be living after my summer sublet expired.
That was 1987.
I'm pleased to report that Camden/Palo Verde Neighborhood Association still has its annual July 4th Parade. This year marked its 45th anniversary, and it's believed to be Tucson's longest running, non-mechanized parade.
Although I no longer live in this neighborhood, I do try to come back for the parade. Being a July 4th celebration, it had plenty of flags...

The marchers were an all-ages group that included adults...

creative children, including this marching swimming pool...

pets on foot and in wagons...

What would a July 4th parade be without marching politicians? Here's Tucson City Councilmember Nina Trasoff...

After the parade ended, prizes were awarded in the Individual, Group, Bicycle, Float, and Animal categories. Looks like that marching pool is a winner!

Event Photography: St. Patrick’s Parade
March 17th, 2008Yesterday was cold, windy, and rainy. Despite the not-so-perfect weather, the annual St. Patrick's Parade wound its way through Downtown Tucson. The Seven Pipers Society helped lead the way...

Since this was a Tucson parade, it had to include some industrial-strength weirdness. The Mashed Potato Queens were more than happy to oblige...

This puppy found the St. Patrick's Parade noise to be a bit much...

Event Photography: Fords on Fourth
February 25th, 2008Yesterday morning, the Mustangs, Thunderbirds, Fairlanes, and T-birds lined up on Tucson's Fourth Avenue. The occasion was Fords on Fourth, an all-Ford car show...

Fords on Fourth offered a veritable banquet of treats for those who like to get under the hood...

Or you could see the festivities reflected on this hood...

If there's one word that could be used to describe a car show, it would be "polish." As in, "polish it until it gleams..."

And, last but not least, no Tucson event would be complete without some colorful people (and their birds) in attendance. This macaw was perched on the shoulder of a friendly fellow who assured me that the bird loved cameras. Having been bitten by a macaw, I was a little skeptical. But I just kept my face covered with the camera and clicked away...

Animal Photography: My Border Collie is Smarter than your Camera
January 11th, 2008Ever seen that bumper sticker that proclaims that the driver's Border Collie is smarter than your honor student? Well, be forewarned, they really are that bright.
Take, for example, my parents' Border Collie mix, Sandy. She has proven to be a formidable subject whenever a camera appears. Her specialty: being in such constant motion that it's hard to get her in focus. However, my mother found a solution to this problem, one that everyone can agree on:
