Event Photography: First Thursday Art Walk

August 6th, 2010

Yesterday evening was one of those times when the "Yeah, right!" storm clouds stomped through central Tucson. You know those clouds. They throw out plenty of thunder and lightning, but rain? No way.

So, I got on my bike and pedaled over to Main Gate Square's First Thursday Art Walk. This month's event featured work by more than 30 local artists, but, quite frankly, I couldn't find it. Then it occurred to me that it was monsoon season, and what artist in his or her right mind would want to display art outdoors?

Thwarted in my attempt to find art, I encountered music instead. Here's a member of One Heart Beat, a local percussion ensemble...

So there I was, enjoying the drumming, and what's this? Big drops of water falling from the sky? So much for saying "Yeah, right!" to the clouds.

It was time for this bike-tographer to hop aboard the two-wheeler and scurry home. Where the wind was whipping the trees, the sun was making a double rainbow, and the clouds were on strike...

Maybe it will rain tonight.

Event Photography: Flags and Memories

July 6th, 2010

When I was in my early twenties, I set the goal of bicycling through all 50 of the United States. I accomplished this over a 12-year period, and wrote and published two books about my experiences.

My travels also took me into Canada. During a 1987 ride down the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Banff, Alberta, I met another bicyclist from Quebec.

In heavily accented English, she told me that she didn't really feel like a Canadian until she'd gone out and pedaled around her country. I said that my American bicycle travels had done the same thing for me.

And that's why the Stars and Strips fly outside my house on the 4th of July...

Event

This is my country, and, thanks to the generosity of the people I met on the road, I've seen it, heard it, and felt from Maine to California and from Alaska to Florida. You can see where I went by visiting my bicycle, nature, and travel photography portfolios.

Bicycle Photography: Going Airborne

June 21st, 2010

The diversity of Tucson's cycling scene never ceases to amaze me. In addition to the wide variety of bicyclists, our two-wheelers are used for a lot more than just riding along the terra firma.

Take, for example, the riders from Southern Arizona Freestyle Entertainment. They treat their bikes like aircraft...

This gravity-defying demo was part of this year's first-ever Cyclovia Tucson. The solar panels behind the rider belong to the Brooklyn Pizza Company, which gets up to 40 percent of its electricity from the sun.

Event Photography: Close-ups at the Bicycle Swap Meet

May 19th, 2010

Last month's Swap Meet was a great place for the buying, selling and trading of anything having to do with bikes and bicycling.

It also presented a wonderful opportunity to engage in the art of bike-tography, which combines bicycling and photography. In addition to getting wide-angle shots of all the action, the Swap Meet was a great venue for close-up work.

I'm not talking about macro close-ups. (After all, the tread wear on used bicycle tires isn't that interesting.) More like "up close and personal" shots.

Take, for example, this look at two guys checking out used bikes...

Or how about the age-old answer of what to lean your bike against if it doesn't have a kickstand. How about a traffic cone?

Bicycle Photography: UA Criterium 2010

February 3rd, 2010

This past Saturday, hundreds of bicycle racers and fans converged on the University of Arizona. The draw was the all-day UA Criterium, which wound its way around the campus. This one’s from a men’s race that took place during the afternoon…

Bicycle Photography: Afternoon Wheel Shadow

January 28th, 2010

My previous post on Dillinger Days was mostly about cars. Well, I’m here to tell you that a lot of people rode their bikes to Dillinger Days, so it’s time to give some equal time to the two-wheelers. Like this one, which casts an interesting shadow on the Toole Avenue sidewalk …

Event Photography: 4th Avenue 2009 Winter Street Fair

December 14th, 2009

Well, it’s December, and the Christmas shopping season is hopping. Time to join several hundred thousand of your best friends on Fourth Avenue for Tucson’s Winter Street Fair.

Along with several dozen other Watershed Management Group volunteers, I worked the edge of the fair. My job was to prevent people from leaving with open containers of alcohol.

Can’t say that I saw any beer walking away, but I did see some catchy wall art while being shuttled to my  security vantage point…

The Watershed Management Group took advantage of the opportunity to show off its new signage…

It wasn’t all beer drinker-watching and no play. I got a chance to wander around the fair. Saw Tucson’s favorite trash container percussionists, the Can Crushers…

Here’s a cool idea: Put Tucson Fire Department’s first aid guys on bikes. If they need an ambulance for patient transport, they can radio for one. Otherwise, they’re saving gas and doing community relations at the same time…

Bicycle Photography: Tucson Snake Bridge

December 10th, 2009

Was riding across the Snake Bridge, which is just east of Downtown Tucson. This is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Broadway Boulevard, and the outside skin has a snake pattern. The southern entrance has a rattler that goes off whenever someone approaches.

The juxtaposition of the Snake Bridge, the traffic below, and my venerable old mountain bike caught my eye…

Bicycle Photography: Nighttime Bike Rack

December 1st, 2009

Last month, I was walking along Congress Street in Downtown Tucson. It was a Monday night, not much happening, and I spotted this lone bike outside the Rialto Theatre.

No acts performing at the Rialto, so that didn’t explain why the bike was there. It almost seemed as if it was forgotten, but it was too nice of a bike to deserve that fate…

Bicycle Photography: El Tour de Tucson 2009

November 24th, 2009

If you’re a bike-tographer like I am, El Tour de Tucson draws you like a magnet.

This annual event goes around the perimeter of Tucson and attracts cyclists from all over the world. I didn’t ride in this year’s El Tour, but I went Downtown to photograph the finishers. And to indulge in some artsiness…

Some, like these guys, treat El Tour like a race and go flat-out for 110 miles…

Other riders treat El Tour more casually, taking the better part of a day to finish it. But, regardless of your speed, if you complete El Tour, you get a medal…

After you finish El Tour de Tucson, there’s nothing like a phone call to tell everyone all about it…
