Concert Photography: Mid-2010 Retrospective
June 8th, 2010Although I'm usually not a blog post recycler, I'll admit that I got the idea for this entry from last month's Tucson Folk Festival commentary.
That post featured a list of the 36 musical acts that I photographed during the Folk Festival's two-day run. They included ArleneWow! (shown below), who came all the way from Connecticut to play for a very appreciative Tucson crowd...

Since concert photography is turning into one of this blog's most-used categories, I figured that now is a good time for a complete list of all the Tucson bands I've photographed.
Some were performing in concert, and others were included in larger community events like Cyclovia Tucson, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair and Meet Me at Maynards.
Here's the list:

Event Photography: Tucson Folk Festival 2010
May 11th, 2010The first weekend of May is generally when summer returns and breathes its fiery breath all over Tucson and southern Arizona.
Not this year. If you didn't bring a sweater and raincoat to this year's Tucson Folk Festival, you wouldn't have been very happy. And that would have been a shame, because the 2010 event was heralded as the best ever.
I'm a little biased about that last point because I was the Folk Festival's official photographer. In two days, I covered three stages and 36 acts. Here are three:
From the Courtyard Stage, the Mas o Menos String Band...

From the Old Town Artisans Stage, Tiffany Jo Allen...

From the Plaza Stage, Saturday evening's headliner, Chris Hillman, formerly of The Byrds...

In order of appearance at the 2010 Tucson Folk Festival, here's a complete list of the performers I photographed:
- Nancy K. Dillon
- Amy Hoyt and Joe White
- Will Edwards (Winner of the 2010 Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Competition. I photographed Will during his two performances on Saturday, May 1 and one on Sunday, May 2)
- Jimmy Pines
- Cristofer Erin
- Debbie Hawkins
- Arnold/Klingefuss Ensemble
- Wayward Maggie
- 16th Place
- Mas o Menos String Band
- Martin Klabunde
- Titan Valley Warheads
- roth d’lux
- Three-Legged Dog
- Wilson, Bowman & Teague
- Shaun Crowell
- Crystal Ridge
- Andrew Dahl-Bredine
- Chris Hillman and Herb Peterson
- Roman Barten-Sherman
- Wally Lawder and Brandie Thornburg
- Tiffany Jo Allen
- Chavez, Hallowell & Long
- Don Simpson
- Deming Fusiliers (I photographed them leading a stringed instrument workshop and in performance.)
- High Desert
- Emilie and Stefan George
- Cox and Serres
- C. Daniel Boling
- Angel Perez
- ArleneWow!
- The Determined Luddites
- Carnivaleros
- Nancy McCallion
- Diane Van Deurzen and Lisa Otey
- John Coinman

Event Photography: A Bicycling Trifecta
April 21st, 2010This past Sunday featured a trifecta of bicycling events here in Tucson. The festivities started with the twice-yearly Bicycle Swap Meet on Fourth Avenue. Both new and used bikes, accessories, and bike parts were on sale...

Want some cycling-themed clothing to go with your new or used bike? Swap Meet regular P. Nosa's ready and waiting to take your embroidery requests...

Care for some car-free street riding? Well, let's ride north from the Swap Meet and join Tucson's first-ever Cyclovia, a five-mile event for walkers, runners, skateboarders, bladers, and bicyclists.
Welcome to car-free Seneca Street...

Cyclovians in need of a musical break were treated to a bus shelter concert by the Missing Parts...

Okay, that's two Tucson bicycling events down and one to go. Let's head to Downtown Tucson for the finish of the New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride...

Event Photography: Fiesta en el Barrio Viejo 2010
April 7th, 2010This past Saturday, a Tucson tradition began. Nine local bands joined together for a rousing good fundraiser for our community radio station, KXCI-FM 91.3. As one would expect from a station that plays a little bit of everything, a wide variety of musical talent was on display.
Headliners Calexico weighed in with a tasty blend of Americana and alt-country...

Crawdaddy-o rolled out the brass for a rousing good set of Cajun-flavored music...

Sergio Mendoza y la Orkestra lit up the late afternoon with a high-energy set combining rock and mambo...

Away from the stage, fiesta-goers made their own entertainment. A spirited group of beginning and experienced hula-hoopers set up shop by the bar. With varying degrees of success, they twirled the day away...

Event Photography: Solar Rock 2010
March 30th, 2010This past Saturday was another one of those warm, sunny Tucson classics. Perfect for one of the first days of spring 2010. All the better for holding Solar Rock, a sun-powered concert in Himmel Park.
Attendees could review and sign the Solar Energy Industries Association's Solar Bill of Rights...

Or how about some Arizona sun-baked pizza?

Care for some music with that solar-cooked food? Solar Rock's concert lineup included the guys and gals from Run Boy Run...

Kevin Pakulis and his longtime bassist, Larry Lee Lerma, provided a tasty blend of blues, country, and rock...

Later in the afternoon, concertgoers were treated to a smokin' hot show by Mitzi Cowell and her band. Here's Mitzi...

Mitzi Cowell's band included Heidi Wilson on saxophone and Nick Augustine on bass...

Mitzi and her band got the people up and dancing!

Event Photography: 4th Avenue 2010 Spring Street Fair
March 24th, 2010This past weekend was one of those springtime Tucson classics. Sunny days, warm temperatures, and who wants to spend a moment indoors? Time to head down to 4th Avenue for the 40th annual Street Fair.
If you rode your bike to the fair, the City of Tucson offered free valet parking. And, yes, I took advantage of it -- that's my bike at the far left...

The 4th Avenue Street Fair stretches for a mile between University Boulevard and the railroad tracks. That's a lot of walking and calorie-burning, but not to worry. These guys would be happy to help you out...

Care for some music to go with your fair shopping? There were plenty of acts to choose from. Here's Tucson singer/songwriter Leila Lopez...

"Spin and win! Everyone's a winner here at KXCI!" says deejay Ron Cipriani. A fairgoer pays a dollar for a spin of the community radio station's wheel -- and she wins a prize...

Further down the way, we have Bob and Trish, a happily married couple who enjoy throwing things at each other...

Event Photography: Tucson Festival of Books 2010
March 16th, 2010Care to share your love of reading with thousands of your best friends? Well, the Tucson Festival of Books is your kind of place. Now in its second year, the festival drew bibliophiles of all ages to the University of Arizona Mall.
While there were plenty of booths filled with the latest books from all manner of publishers, used book seekers weren't left out. They flocked to the abundant offerings at Habitat for Humanity Tucson's Habistore...

Since this was such a large event, blades were one of the best ways to get around and see everything...

How about some tunes to go with all of those words? Gertie and the TO Boys brought plenty of waila and chicken-scratch music from the Tohono O'odham Nation...

Don't feel like walking back to your car? Ttaking the pedicab...

Event Photography: Tucson Carnaval 2010
February 16th, 2010Now in its third year, Tucson Carnaval celebrates spring, life, the arts, and community connections. This event featured concerts by many local bands, including Spirit Familia.
Here's Spirit Familia's band leader, Jomo Alan, who lives a block away from me. He practices the flute while bicycling along our street...

Richard Rivera adds guitar and vocals to the Spirit Familia mix of African, Latin, Reggae, and Funk rhythms...

And what would a Brazilian-influenced festival be without Batucaxe?

Or how about those fun-loving Carnivaleros, who don't just get the crowd dancing, they join in!

December 14th, 2009Well, it's December, and the Christmas shopping season is hopping. Time to join several hundred thousand of your best friends on Fourth Avenue for Tucson's Winter Street Fair.
Along with several dozen other Watershed Management Group volunteers, I worked the edge of the fair. My job was to prevent people from leaving with open containers of alcohol.
Can't say that I saw any beer walking away, but I did see some catchy wall art while being shuttled to my security vantage point...

The Watershed Management Group took advantage of the opportunity to show off its new signage...

It wasn't all beer drinker-watching and no play. I got a chance to wander around the fair. Saw Tucson's favorite trash container percussionists, the Can Crushers...

Here's a cool idea: Put Tucson Fire Department's first aid guys on bikes. If they need an ambulance for patient transport, they can radio for one. Otherwise, they're saving gas and doing community relations at the same time...

Nothing like watching the sun set over the barbecue stand...

Event Photography: Tucson Firefighters Chili Cookoff
November 12th, 2009How about a nice, warm bowl of chili for a good cause? And, better yet, cooked and served with a smile by local firefighters?
At last Friday's Tucson Firefighters Chili Cookoff, thousands of gallons of the good stuff were available. Firefighters from various departments set up booths to sell dollar-a-bowl chili, with the proceeds going to benefit the Tucson Firefighters Adopt-a-Family program. As one firefighter told me, the true value of the event was in giving back to the community while having a good time.
Speaking of good times, here's the Northwest Fire District's fraternity house chili booth...

No, these kids were not flattened by flaming bowls of chili. They were participating in the breakdancing contest...

How about some smoking hot blues to go with that chili? Here's Clark Engelbert of CrossCut Saw...
